“A pioneer California rancher, James M. Stone, 92, who died recently in his Los Angeles home, is remembered by friends in Mesa Grande, where he lived for many years, as a successful cattleman and expert rifle shot.

“Born in Paris, Mo., in 1849, Mr. Stone came to California at an early age and settled near Santa Barbara. Soon afterwards he moved to Mesa Grande and opened a cattle ranch with his brother John. His range became so limited in 1895 that he sold his interests and moved to Texas, where he again found success.

“Mr. Stone returned to Los Angeles in 1905 and lived there until his death. He is survived by his wife, Susie, and a daughter, Lela, both of Los Angeles.” (San Diego Union, May 24, 1941).
