AQUATICS

Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley has junior Olympic-sized swimming pools in both camps, offering a variety of aquatics activities.  During summer camp we offer Swimming and Lifesaving Merit Badge instruction, BSA Lifeguard, free swim (during the Afternoon Open Session session, both pools), mile swim (friday morning 9 AM), Polar Bear morning swim (6:00 AM, sharp), the Lost Valley Triathlon (Friday, 1:15 PM), Snorkeling BSA (by appointment) and the Troop/Patrol Aquacade Games on Friday, at 2:30 PM.

Lake Virginia will be closed after Week 2 in 2009 because of drought conditions. The waterfront at Lake Virginia offers the Canoeing and Rowing Merit Badges and free boating.

Complete Canoeing Merit Badge at the Newport Sea Base.

BSA Lifeguard:  Is very demanding both physically and mentally.  The course will take all daily sessions during the week.  Participants must have vaild CPR certification from either American Red Cross or American Heart Association before trying to take the course.

CPR Requirements for Aquatics Merit Badges: Scouts must demonstrate knowledge of CPR for Swimming, Lifesaving, Rowing, and Canoeing Merit Badges.  This can be done one of three ways:

  1. Bring a current vaild CPR card (or photocopy of the card) from either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  2. Demonstate CPR at the First Aid area (Tom Tabb Center) during afternoon open program from 3:30 to 4:30 M-Th.  This is just a demonstration, the Scouts will not be certified in either American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR.
  3. Bring a signed note from a Scoutmaster verifying the Scout's knowledge of CPR.  Having the First Aid Merit Badge will suffice for CPR knowledge.
